Aaron Collis (button accordion) and Emilia Bartellas (fiddle) have quickly gained a reputation as two of Newfoundland’s outstanding traditional music interpreters, performing dance tunes from the province’s rich musical history in a tight, dynamic style. As members of local trad band The Dardanelles, Aaron and Emilia have performed on stages across Canada, the US, and as far afield as Scotland and Australia. In 2013, the duo released their self-titled, debut album. Dedicated to those players who have passed along their love and enthusiasm for the tunes, it pays homage to the traditional accordion and fiddle music of Newfoundland and Labrador. Featuring dance music from all across the province—from Cape Broyle to Rigolet and from Bay de Verde to the Port au Port Peninsula—the album was named MusicNL Traditional Album of the Year in 2014. Both Aaron and Emilia have individually been awarded The Dermot O’Reilly Legacy Award for promoting traditional music and demonstrating leadership and creativity in the tradition-bearer community of Newfoundland and Labrador.
