Anna MacDonald grew up with deep roots in Cape Breton culture. She comes from a family of musicians, dancers, Gaelic speakers, and other tradition-bearers. She started step dancing at a very young age and grew up learning from a variety of teachers around Cape Breton. This allowed Anna to develop her own style that is still deeply rooted in the Cape Breton tradition, with a focus on synergy between the dance, music, and language. She started teaching step dance when she was in high school and continues to teach when she has the opportunity. Anna has danced on stages and in dance halls around Cape Breton Island, including performing with the traditional Cape Breton step dance group, Fileanta. In addition to being a step dancer, Anna is also a practicing lawyer in her hometown of Baddeck.
