Gaelic culture runs deep in Christmas Island (Eilean Na Nollaig), where the traditions have been kept up, treasured, and passed on for generations. Through the efforts of local organization Comunn Féis an Eilein, the community has been active in presenting concerts, céilidhs, workshops and other learning opportunities to help preserve and promote the Gaelic language and culture in the area. Gaelic will be front-and-centre again here today with celebrated Gaelic singers and tradition-bearers Mary Jane Lamond and Cathy Ann MacPhee. Còmhla cruinn means “gathered together” and Christmas Island’s long history of being a gathering place for Cape Breton Gaels will continue with this concert featuring songs sung in Gaelic and English, pipes and fiddle tunes, and Cape Breton step dancing. Enjoy the scenic drive alongside the Bras d’Or Lake as you make your way to Christmas Island today where these fine performers from Scotland and Cape Breton will present an afternoon of traditional and Gaelic-influenced music and culture.
