One of the most remarkable things about Celtic Colours is how hundreds of artists get moved around all over Cape Breton Island to as many as six and seven concerts a day for nine days running. Keeping this logistical challenge from becoming a logistical nightmare are the dedicated volunteers of the Festival Volunteer Drive’ers Association. In addition to driving artists around, members of the not-for-profit association, formed in 2004, sell Festival and artist CDs at Celtic Colours concerts for a small commission. Since 2006, the Association—in partnership with Lakewind Sound Studios—has used the monies collected from these sales to help an up-and-coming Cape Breton Celtic artist record their first album. In 2010, the Festival featured the first four recipients of what has become known as the Big Sampie award, named for the late Frank Sampson, a dedicated member of the driver corps. Drive’er Again picks up where that concert left off showcasing some of the more recent Big Sampie winners.
