Making their Celtic Colours debut in this concert, The Dublin Trio brings together three well-travelled masters of Irish traditional music in vocalist and bodhrán player Kevin Conneff, uilleann pipes and whistles player Joe McKenna, and guitarist Tony Byrne. Kevin and Tony have played the Festival before, with The Chieftains and Julie Fowlis respectively, so it will be exciting to see them in this new trio. Maura Shawn Scanlon, a two-time U.S. National Scottish Fiddle Champion and a winner of the Glenfiddich Fiddle Competition, performs with the technical range of a classical violinist and the deep sensitivity of a traditional musician. A stylistically diverse guitar player, Conor Hearn has established himself as a cutting-edge accompanist for Scottish and Irish music. With their shared background in traditional Irish and Scottish music Maura Shawn and Conor Hearn play together in the duo Rakish. Toeing the line between concert music and session music, Rakish explores tunes and songs from Irish and American folk traditions in a way that reflects their shared interest in, and love for, old traditional tunes and chamber music. Guitarists Scott Macmillan and James MacLean complete tonight’s Rakish Reels lineup in Baddeck.
