The musical culture of Scotland, Newfoundland, and Cape Breton Island will take centre stage when a legendary songwriter, a lively and captivating folk band, and a couple of serial collaborators gather in Whycocomagh tonight. This show is a really good example of what Celtic Colours is all about. It includes excellence in performance from three distinct but closely related traditions and friendships formed through shared experience. Archie Fisher is a songwriter of legendary repute who made his first record in the late 1960s, worked with Makem & Clancy and Silly Wizard, and appeared regularly on TV during the folk music boom of the 1960s and ‘70s. Rum Ragged’s combination of striking vocal harmonies, staggering musicianship, and captivating storytelling enlivens and enlightens audiences with their signature brand of Newfoundland folk. Rose Morrison and Màiri Chaimbeul combine Cape Breton fiddle and Scottish harp with traditional Gaelic and contemporary song when they team up. The Whycocomagh Gathering is one of those Celtic Colours concerts that has its own long history, having hosted sold out shows since the Festival began. Get your tickets early for this one.
