Cape Breton fiddler, piano-player and composer Howie MacDonald is considered by many as a good example of how we do things here on Cape Breton Island–with love of family, respect for tradition, and an irrepressible sense of humour. In many ways he embodies the values of influential Cape Breton fiddler Winston “Scotty” Fitzgerald’s playing, the tunes he played and the keys he played them in. And in doing so, Howie’s playing has become a benchmark in its own right, incorporating the influence of Winston as well as legendary contemporaries like Jerry Holland and Buddy MacMaster, shaped by years of touring with the Rankin Family and a lifetime of playing at dances and sessions all over Cape Breton Island. Howie released his twelfth album, Shades of Tartan, earlier this year and we’ve brought together some of the folks who played on the album in this tribute to Howie MacDonald. Additional guests to make special appearances!
