Sacred Heart Catholic Church, which sits on top of a hill overlooking the Bras d’Or Lake in the quiet and beautiful community of Johnstown, is a landmark for boaters. Built in 1891, the church still has the original main alter which was purchased in Quebec. Two local painters, both unknown, painted the interior walls and ceiling sometime in the 1940s. These painted surfaces are all in good condition and have never been retouched. Behind Sacred Heart stands the Lady of Guadalupe Shrine.
