Completed in 1837, Notre Dame de l’Assomption Church, in Arichat, is one of the biggest and oldest wooden Catholic churches in the Maritimes. The Church is a provincial heritage site with an architectural blend of Neo-Classical and Gothic Revival styles. Notre Dame de l’Assomption was the cathedral for the Diocese of Arichat for 42 years. The first classes for what became St Francis Xavier University in Antigonish were opened in Arichat by Bishop Mackinnon on July 20th 1853 on this site.
