Stephanie Conn

Cape Breton

Stephanie Conn sings Gaelic traditional songs and plays piano and concertina in concerts and sessions in Cape Breton and Toronto, Ontario. She founded and manages Féis a’ Chladaich a Tuath [North Shore Féis], an annual event celebrating the North Shore Gaelic singers and song. A former CBC Radio producer with a PhD in ethnomusicology, her research focusses on Gaelic singing traditions in Cape Breton. With the Cape Breton crossover ensemble Puirt a Baroque—as solo singer and step dancer—she earned a Juno Award nomination for the CD Return of the Wanderer and performed in more than 100 concerts across Canada, as well as on live broadcasts in Canada and the United States. As a professional choral singer, she has performed with Tafelmusik, La Chapelle de Quebec, and Aradia Ensemble on CDs and in major halls across North America. She sang Anna I and acted Anna II in The Friends of Gravity’s production of The Seven Deadly Sins by Kurt Weill. Her singing was described as “genuine, intelligent, and nuanced”. We are delighted to have Stephanie join us to perform in the North Shore Gaels concert, which she conceived along with Mary Jane Lamond and is directing. Stephanie will also be appearing in the tribute to Alistair MacLeod, To Everything There is a Season.
