There is perhaps no better way to experience the power and pride of Cape Breton’s fiddle tradition than by spending an afternoon with the Cape Breton Fiddlers’ Association. This annual concert is a celebration of the enduring strength of the island’s musical heritage and the community that sustains it. Formed in 1973 in response to concerns that Cape Breton’s distinctive fiddle style might fade from memory, the Association quickly became a force of revival and renewal. Their first gathering brought together more than 130 fiddlers from all over the island—a landmark moment in the preservation of the tradition. Today, the Association includes players of all ages and skill levels, from seasoned tradition bearers to young musicians just starting to find their way through the tunes. This intergenerational approach—nurturing new players while honouring the old—has helped keep the music vibrant and evolving. This is how culture and tradition survive. Expect a joyful afternoon as dozens of fiddlers fill the hall with marches, jigs, reels, and strathspeys, accompanied by lively piano and the occasional step dance. One of the Association’s main goals for 2025 is to feature the youth element of the organization, so we will also see that reflected in today’s concert. Whether this is your first Celtic Colours or your fifteenth, the Cape Breton Fiddlers concert is a touchstone for understanding the heart of the music.
