It’s a busy time in Baddeck with two Celtic Colours concerts on the go in the village tonight. Influential Irish-American group Solas is in town as part of their 30th anniversary tour. Having never played at Celtic Colours before, this is their second of two shows at the festival, so if you missed them in Glace Bay on Wednesday, then tonight’s the night to catch them. Solas shares the MacAulay Conference Centre stage with award-winning Pictou County singer, songwriter, and producer Dave Gunning who is joined by his son, Jud. Jud’s genuine love of music, dedication to the craft of playing guitar, and strong repertoire of classic songs and instrumentals will shine through in their performance. Back in the fall of 2012, multi-instrumentalist, composer, and dancer Troy MacGillivray and piano player Allan Dewar embarked on a tour through the New England states featuring some of Troy’s own compositions alongside unique arrangements of tunes by great composers from the traditional fiddle world. The Antigonish County musicians called the tour Tune Poets, and it was so well-received that it resulted in the recording of, and contributed the name to, Troy’s sixth album. Tonight, Troy and Allan are joined by Port Hood native Brennan MacDonald for some tunes. Maybe they’ll even play some from that album.
