Breton Chamber Choir

Cape Breton

The original Breton Chamber Choir was a small choral group gathered by Christopher Francis in 1990. This ensemble of dedicated local musicians performed regionally for several years. Many of the singers were also members of the Cape Breton Chorale. Ryan Billington and pianist/organist Paula Jane Francis decided to use the name of the earlier choir for this encore performance of Scott Macmillan’s Celtic Mass for the Sea. Some of the original singers of the Breton Chamber Choir have returned for this special occasion. Since 2017, Ryan has brought his wealth of experience, skill, and knowledge to the Cape Breton Chorale. As a vocalist, Ryan has performed jazz, musical theatre, oratorio, and blues influenced music. An inventive arranger and composer, he has written music for contemporary vocal ensembles, male chorus, handbells, theatre productions, and for solo voice and piano. Paula Jane Francis has served as collaborative pianist for the Cape Breton Chorale since 1976. She has a Master’s degree in organ performance and sang in the Bach Choir in London under the direction of Sir David Willcocks. Paula Jane has also taught with the Cape Breton Victoria Regional School Board, was co-director of the Northside Honour Choir, maintains a private piano studio, and provides service as organist and choir director at Carman United Church, Sydney Mines.
