The Cape Breton Island Pipe Band is a competition and performance band that exists under the umbrella of the Island Pipes and Drums Association. The Band has grown out of a teaching program initiated in 2014 with sponsorship by the Royal Nova Scotia International Tattoo, aimed at teaching youth across Nova Scotia for free. With a mandate to teach and promote piping and drumming, develop strong connections to highland culture, and foster an enthusiasm for life-long learning in youth in Cape Breton, the Association now features a Grade 3 band of more than 20 members, a Grade 5 band, and registration of more than 40 youth and adult individuals in its teaching program. The Band has competed successfully in Highland Games across the Maritimes, Ontario, and Scotland, with many first-place wins, including the Grade 5 North American Championships at the Glengarry Highland Games in Maxville, Ontario in 2019, and most recently finishing third at the World Pipe Band Championships for grade 4a in Glasgow, Scotland in 2023.
