Lewis MacKinnon is a singer, musician, and poet born in Inverness, Cape Breton, and raised in Antigonish County, Nova Scotia. A fluent Gaelic speaker, Lewis has released two albums–one of Gaelic songs, A’ Seo / Here (2006) and one of English songs, Making More of It (2010)–and two books of poems, Famhair: Agus Dàin Ghàidhlig Eile / Giant: And Other Gaelic Poems (2008) and Rudan Mì-bheanailteach is an Cothroman, Dàin / Intangible Possibilities, Poems (2014). As Artist in Residence at Celtic Colours in 2010, Lewis worked with professional Gaelic artists from Nova Scotia and Scotland, and advanced Gaelic learners from the North Shore area of Cape Breton, to co-write new Gaelic songs and poetry that were presented during the Festival that year. In 2011, Lewis was awarded the Scottish Bardic Crown, making him the first non-Scottish official bard (poet laureate) of the Royal National Mod. A regular performer at Celtic Colours, Lewis is joined on piano, guitar and accompanying vocals by his longtime musical companion, Jug In Hand band mate and singer-songwriter, Brian England.
