Margaret Stewart

Scotland

Margaret Stewart is a distinguished Gaelic singer from the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides. A native Gaelic speaker, she was raised in a community where oral tradition, music, and local history were central to daily life. Her deep-rooted connection to this heritage has shaped her as both a tradition-bearer and internationally respected performer. Winner of the prestigious Royal National Mòd Gold Medal in 1993, Margaret has become established as one of Scotland’s most acclaimed interpreters of traditional Gaelic song. Her recordings—including Fhuair mi Pòg, Colla mo Rùn, with piper Allan MacDonald, and her solo album Togaidh mi mo Sheòlta—are praised for their emotional depth, cultural authenticity, and scholarly grounding. Margaret has performed at major festivals across Europe and in North America, and is also a respected teacher and mentor, having taught at institutions such as the Ceòlas Summer School, Sabhal Mòr Ostaig, and the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. She collaborates frequently with harpist Ingrid Henderson and her brother, fiddler/pianist Allan Henderson. She is currently undertaking a PhD through the medium of Gaelic, focusing on community memory and the shieling tradition on the North Lewis moors. Her work bridges performance and research, offering audiences a profound connection to the living Gaelic tradition.
