Dr. Domhnall Uilleam Stiùbhart, a Senior Lecturer at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig the Gaelic college on the Isle of Skye, will explore the history of “taibhsearachd” – forerunners, or second sight – in Gaelic-speaking communities in Nova Scotia and in the Scottish Highlands. What were its origins? What forms did omens take, and how did people understand them? Who had the second sight, how was it acquired, and how might the unwanted gift be got rid of? Finally, what do these stories reveal about the communities in which they were told, in Nova Scotia and in the Old Country?
Those in attendance are encouraged to share their own stories. Tea will be served.
