The Boularderie School lies in the shadow of Kelly’s Mountain, a local landmark that serves as the namesake for a popular Cape Breton song, and whose likeness is painted on the nearby mountain that bears his name. Presuming Kelly appreciated music, he would surely consider tonight’s lineup a dream come true. Scottish-born Canadian singer-songwriter David Francey’s heartfelt lyrics and comforting voice have earned him a place among the very best songwriters in the country. His storytelling is vivid and authentic, shaped by years of acute observation and lived experience. David will receive a warm welcome here where his song “The Ballad of Bowser MacRae” is a local favourite. Rachel Davis and Darren McMullen, longtime collaborators and members of the award-winning group Còig, share a musical partnership grounded in tradition and intuition. Their recent duo album, Home, showcases their blend of traditional Cape Breton fiddle tunes and contemporary acoustic arrangements of songs in English and Gaelic. Their interactive playing and well-considered repertoire bring out the best in each other and the music. Completing tonight’s lineup is Westward The Light, a dynamic quartet from Scotland making their Celtic Colours debut. Featuring fiddle, viola, piano, guitar, and the relatively rare, ten-string Norweigan fiddle called a hardanger d’amore, their instrumental music is rooted in Scottish tradition but full of contemporary energy and expansive interplay. Their critically acclaimed albums reveal a band both steeped in the old ways and looking toward the future. This is a night for slowing down, listening closely, and letting the music do what it does best—move you.
