Barry Shears

Glace Bay native Barry Shears has been playing the bagpipe for almost 60 years. He began collecting and composing music for the Highland bagpipe at an early age and is an acknowledged expert on the history of traditional piping in Nova Scotia and its intrinsic connection to the Gaelic language, music, and culture of the province. He has published seven books of bagpipe music and history, appeared in two movies, and plays on several recordings of traditional music. An award-winning musician, Barry has performed at festivals and concerts throughout North America and Europe, including Celtic Colours in 1997, 1998, and 2000. It is a pleasure to welcome Barry back to the festival this year.
