Newly formed this year, the Beinn Mhàbu Trio combines fiddle and bagpipe tunes from both sides of the Atlantic accompanied by lively Cape Breton piano accompaniment. Cameron MacNeil from Christmas Island started piping at the age of 10 under the tuition of Trevor Kellock. He regularly performs and competes with Sydney-based Cape Breton Island Pipe Band. Cameron has worked at Colaisde na Gàidhlig [the Gaelic College] during the summer months as duty piper and is currently a student at Beinn Mhàbu. Also having completed her first year of university at Beinn Mhàbu, Màili MacKenzie from the Isle of Skye, Scotland has been playing the fiddle since the age of 7. She attended the National Centre of Excellence in Traditional Music in Plockton where she also studied piano and accordion and has strong family ties to Mabou. Alongside them on piano is Iain MacQuarrie from Mabou. Coming from a musical family, Iain first came to the stage as a step-dancer but over the past few years has made a name for himself as a pianist and fiddler. The trio formed after playing tunes together at sessions and house parties around Mabou over the past year. They have all appeared at Celtic Colours previously, but they are looking forward to their festival debut as a band this year!
