The Cow Bay Céilidh is a long-standing tradition in Port Morien during Celtic Colours. Typically an early sell-out, the Tuesday night concert has established itself as presenting a most entertaining mix of songs and tunes in this beautiful little seaside community once known as Cow Bay. The only thing more magical than the view of the bay is the community’s welcoming spirit and generous hospitality. To be fair though, there’s a very real chance the sounds coming from the stage this evening may give even that view a run for its money. Liz Doherty is a fiddle player from County Donegal, Ireland, known for her distinctive style and strong Scottish and Cape Breton influences. She began coming to Cape Breton in the early 1990s to research fiddle music and has performed at Celtic Colours since 1998. She’s teamed up with piano player Ryan MacNeil who grew up in a musical environment in Sydney Mines with his brothers and sisters from the Barra MacNeils. Linchpin figures in the currently flourishing revival of Orkney’s traditional music, Saltfishforty unites deep-rooted sources with an exhilarating breadth of influence and expertise, resulting in a sound that is equally thrilling raw attack and multi-dimensional richness. Cape Breton songwriter Steve MacIntyre carries on the tradition of the region’s great songwriters. He’s become the epitome of the folk troubadour, putting miles on the road and collecting songs and stories in his travels. Steve will keep you entertained with his lyrics and on-stage banter.
