In his song “Kelly’s Mountain”, from the 1997 masterpiece Another Morning, J.P. Cormier sings of taking his love “…over Kelly’s Mountain to the village there below…”, presumably to live happily ever after. But in classic tragic folk ballad style, they never make it. Tonight’s venue, Boularderie School, lies in the shadow of that same mountain, and this time, J.P. himself will be there. A strong contingent of players and dancers from Inverness County, Antigonish County, and Prince Edward Island will be coming “o’er the mountain” to set the stage for this concert with high energy tunes and dancing. You’d be hard-pressed to find a livelier lineup of players than Troy MacGillivray, Shelly Campbell, Allan Dewar, and Brent Chaisson, and champion Highland dancer, step dancer, and award-winning choreographer Sabra MacGillivray will join the crew for some steps. And that’s just the first half! J.P. and his longtime musical pal Dave Gunning will take the stage for the second half to dazzle you with their stunning musicianship, heartfelt songwriting, and quick sense of humour. Whether they’re collaborating on new songs or rearranging old folk standards, singing harmonies or covering instrumental breaks, Gunning & Cormier will leave you in awe of their ability to find the spaces in what the other is doing and make it even better.
