“To Everything There is a Season” is a beloved short story written by Alister MacLeod. It’s a poignant coming-of-age tale that explores themes of family, migration and resilience. Set during Christmastime, it paints an image of children bundled in a sleigh as a horse pulls them to a picturesque country church. The Cape Breton family is preparing for a visit from their oldest son from Ontario. The family is in transition: children are moving into adult roles, and their father reflects on the meaning of his life as an ailing miner and head of the household. Conceived and directed by part-time Hillsborough, Inverness County resident and musician Daniel Rubinoff, the dramatic reading is interspersed with Cape Breton music—from Gaelic airs to traditional fiddling and the rich tradition of song that permeates this land. Alister’s words will be presented by Celtic Colours co-founder Max MacDonald. Songs will be shared by Ella Dubinski, Stephanie Conn and the Inverness County Chamber Singers. Kyle MacDonald, Mac Morin, and James MacLean will keep your toes tapping.
