From the heart of Lanaudière, one of the most francophone parts of Canada, this group of cultural carriers maintains the social construct around ancient Québecois call-and-answer singing. Their repertoire—largely from the village of St-Côme, self-proclaimed world capital of traditional Québecois song—is a rich mix of merrymaking themes with much double entendre, at times not so subtle. Their performances back home are legendary, well attended, and extremely popular across generations. Many younger musicians emulate them. Gaston Lepage, the group’s leader, has done a great deal of song collecting from his elders. Hommage aux Aînés literally means “Tribute to the Elders”. With his sister Louise Lepage on piano, they are joined by Michel Bordeleau (Les Charbonniers de l’Enferon) tenor guitar, Danny Baillargeon (La Giroflée) on guitar, and Jean-François Branchaud (La Bottine Souriante) on violin. Their infectious good humour transcends language. In 2024, Hommage aux Aînés appeared on the program La Grande Veillée on ICI ARTV filmed in Moncton alongside Cape Breton’s very own Béolàch for an unforgettable coming together of cultures. This is their first appearance in Cape Breton.
