The Men of the Deeps

For sixty years, Cape Breton’s Men of the Deeps have travelled the world, sharing the songs and stories of Canada’s coal-mining communities. Formed to preserve an important part of our island’s history and culture, the choir continues to celebrate the people, traditions, and experiences that shaped generations of mining families. For six decades, they’ve performed across Canada, throughout much of the United States, and internationally in China and Kosovo. Their travels have taken them from the Northwest Territories to the coalfields of Kentucky, Virginia, and Pennsylvania, as well as Arizona, Alabama, Florida, and Las Vegas. More than a choir, the Men of the Deeps are storytellers, keeping alive the experiences, humour, hardships, and traditions of generations of mining families. Their genuine camaraderie and down-to-earth style have made them favourites with audiences wherever they perform. Dressed in their coveralls and helmets, the Men always make a memorable entrance in the dark, guided only by their headlamps as they take to the stage.
