Fiddle music takes centre stage tonight in Judique! Home of the Celtic Music Interpretive Centre—whose mission is to celebrate and foster the Celtic music and heritage of Cape Breton Island as a living tradition—the community of Judique is celebrating its 250th anniversary this year. What better way to recognize such a venerable milestone than to present a concert showcasing one of the region’s most ubiquitous musical instruments. Although it has gone on to develop an identity of its own over time, Cape Breton’s fiddle music has its roots in Scotland and Ireland. Tonight’s concert will feature fiddlers from Scotland and Ireland alongside well-established local players from Cape Breton and neighbouring Antigonish County. Westward the Light is a Scottish folk quartet creating a new expression of an age-old sound with fiddles, viola, guitar, and piano. The band’s powerful and dynamic music is reflective of upbringings immersed in the nature and landscapes of Scotland. Brothers Kyle and Shuemas MacNeil have spent almost 40 years touring and recording with their siblings in the Barra MacNeils. And they were playing fiddle and piano for concerts and dances around Cape Breton even before they formed the band. Completing tonight’s lineup are Irish fiddler Liz Doherty and multi-instrumentalist Troy MacGillivray from Antigonish County, both past Artists in Residence at the festival.
