Located on the northeastern coast of Isle Madame—an Acadian community connected by bridge to southern Richmond County—D’Escousse is one of the main settlements on the small island. The drive to D’Escousse can be a bit twisty and turn-y, but the scenery more than makes up for the time spent getting there. In fact, it’s worth it to head to the concert early and take some time to explore the rocky, rugged shore of Isle Madame. Singer-songwriter Sam Moon’s mother is from D’Escousse, so what better place for the Cape Breton music legend to make his Celtic Colours debut? Sam burst out of Cape Breton Island in the late 1960s alongside Matt Minglewood in the band Moon Minglewood & the Universal Power. With the experience earned from their time in the Universal Power as their foothold, Sam and Matt each went on to front their own successful bands. Sam’s eclectic, hard driving, rock-R&B-and-soul fusion would prove popular throughout the 1970s and ‘80s and he released two albums to great critical acclaim while contributing songs to many other artists’ recordings and stage productions. Sam continues to perform in an acoustic duo, playing songs like his folk classic “The Girls of Neils Harbour”, and “The Golden Hands of Time”, which happens to be the first song he ever wrote. Award-winning multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter J.P. Cormier is known for writing a few classic East Coast songs himself and he’ll have that catalogue to draw on as well as a mind-boggling array of tunes from all over the musical map. The transatlantic fiddle-piano duo of Kevin Henderson and Neil Pearlman also cover a lot of musical ground, melding Kevin’s Shetland, Scottish, Irish, and Scandinavian influences with Neil’s jazz-infused arrangements, percussive Cape Breton-style drive, and groove-heavy approach to accompaniment. This concert will be a real treat for all kinds of music lovers.
