A perennial favourite at Celtic Colours, the Pipers’ Céilidh never fails to thrill pipes enthusiasts of all descriptions. This afternoon’s concert takes place at Colaisde na Gàidhlig [the Gaelic College] in beautiful St. Ann’s. The only institution of its kind in North America, piping has been taught at the College for many years. Each year the Pipers’ Ceilidh showcases a variety of pipers and piping styles and this year’s line-up offers more of the same. Brothers Kenneth and Angus MacKenzie were raised in a Gaelic-speaking and musical family in Mabou. Both are accomplished pipers, Kenneth being in high demand for dances, concerts and festivals, and Angus as a founding member of Gaelic powerhouse Dàimh and for playing with Scottish piping collective Seudan. Ryan J. MacNeil is celebrated for his powerful yet graceful playing style, firmly rooted in Cape Breton’s rich, dance-driven musical traditions. Ryan has been working with the Cape Breton Island Pipe Band alongside Trevor Kellock. The two will team up with Boyd MacNeil for some tunes this afternoon. Antigonish piper Heather MacIsaac and Cape Breton Cameron MacNeil round out the lineup of pipers for today’s céilidh with Mac Morin on piano.
