Hamish Moore

Scotland

Hamish Moore has been fortunate enough to have been at the forefront of the revival of the bellows blown pipes of Scotland for the last 40 years. Helped by his father who was also a piper and had an encyclopaedic knowledge of tropical hard woods and who’s main hobby was wood turning, Hamish started making professionally in 1986. He has also been lucky enough to have his son Fin, a fantastic piper, serve as an apprenticeship, and now has taken custody of the family business, making pipes of extremely high quality. Hamish has been teaching his grandson, Calin, who is playing pipes made by Hamish’s father, Calin’s great grandfather. Hamish’s life changed forever when, in 1986, he heard Buddy MacMaster, Dave MacIsaac, and Maybelle Chisolm McQueen playing live at the Philadelphia Folk Festival. What he heard was in time, and with visits to Cape Breton and getting to know the wonderful Cape Breton tradition bearers, to answer many of the mysteries and anomalies of Scottish culture. He was desperate to share these revelations with everyone back home in the Old Country. The result was, that after many years of trying, he finally managed to establish Ceòlas, the summer school in South Uist which has Cape Breton at its heart. Hamish considers it a privilege to continue working and developing his pipe making and is deeply involved in creating many ongoing projects of intangible cultural heritage, the latest and most important of which is his Raasay Piping Competition.
