Marrow Bones
A fiddler from Newfoundland, a piper from the Eastern Townships of Québec, and a strummer from Antigonish, Nova Scotia walk into a wooden hall. What happens next? Maximum Celtic Groove! Marrow Bones is an eclectic roots ensemble featuring best friends Mary Beth Carty (accordion, guitar, bones, voice, foot-stomp), Colin Carrigan (fiddle, mandolin, bouzouki), and Roy MacLaren (whistles, banjo, pipes). The trio began by hosting an annual spring barn-dance a few years back and is excited to make their Celtic Colours debut with a fresh mash-up of tune sets, waltzes, and unusual songs. Mary Beth Carty is winner of the 2024 Canadian Folk Music Award for Traditional Singer of the Year and recently had a song included on the Putumayo compilation Celtic Voices. Roy MacLaren’s piping is greatly influenced by Hamish Moore and he’s recorded tin-whistle on albums by Joel Plaskett, Buck 65, and Al Tuck. Colin Carrigan has toured with the Ennis Sisters, composed tunes recorded by the Navigators, and plays many compositions by the late Newfoundland fiddler Émile Benoît. Together, Marrow Bones is a unique power-trio who combines improvisational elements and deep tradition.
