Matthew “Mattie” Foulds is a Canadian drummer, producer, and recording engineer known for his dynamic contributions to the folk, jazz, and acoustic music scenes. The Cape Breton native began his musical journey performing with prominent East Coast artists Realworld, Bruce Guthro, Rita MacNeil, and Natalie MacMaster. He was also a founding member of long running Cape Breton trad group Beòlach. Seeking new creative horizons, Foulds relocated to Scotland, where he became an integral part of the UK folk scene. His collaborations include work with Karine Polwart, Shooglenifty, Eliza Carthy, and Kate Rusby. As a drummer, Foulds is celebrated for his powerful yet nuanced playing style, which brings both energy and sensitivity to his performances. Beyond performance, Foulds is an accomplished producer and engineer who has produced and mixed hundreds of projects, including award-winning albums for Rachel Newton. He continues to contribute to the music industry not only through live performances, studio recordings, and mentorship, but also as an artistic consultant for this year’s festival, solidifying his reputation as a versatile and dedicated artist. Foulds will be joining his former bandmates in Beòlach onstage this year in celebration of their 25th anniversary.
