Back in the 1950s and ‘60s, fiddlers like Buddy MacMaster played dances all over the island, and one of the halls he played was in Creignish. There is a recording from one of those dances with Buddy and his sister Geneveive providing the music and a prompter, Joe MacDougall, who you can hear calling the sets. Locally known dancers like Don Reilly were also in attendance. Almost every fiddle player from Cape Breton has learned music from that iconic recording. We’re bringing back the dance this year as fiddler Wendy MacIsaac and piano player Mac Morin welcome you to their home community for an exciting night at the same hall that Buddy played more than half a century ago and where Wendy and Mac themselves learned how to step dance. Wendy and Mac will be joined by a variety of musical friends from this hotbed of Scottish heritage. This is a dance to participate in rather than a concert to sit and watch, with locals on the floor and a prompter calling some sets for those who want to learn. Tonight’s dance is in memory of Creignish native Dan MacDonald who was a staunch supporter of, and dedicated volunteer for, Celtic Colours from day one.
