Mi’kmaw fiddler Lee Cremo was a folk hero and legendary musician, well-known throughout Unama’ki and beyond. He grew up in Eskasoni listening to his father, Simon, playing the fiddle at home, where music was a big part of daily life. Lee started with guitar and picked up the fiddle later learning from his father and other well-known fiddlers Wilfred Prosper, Winston “Scotty” Fitzgerald, and Dan Hughie MacEachern. Lee’s style was electric—a distinct and rich mix of traditions and influences—and he played with a spirit and enthusiasm contagious to both his fellow musicians and audiences. A six-time winner of the Maritime Old Time Fiddling Contest, Lee performed for Queen Elizabeth II at Expo 67, and was declared “Best Bow Arm in the World” at the Grand Master Fiddling Championships in Nashville, Tennessee in the early 1970s. Known for his humour, kindness, humility and generosity, Lee was always performing at céilidhs, dances, fundraisers, weddings, and funerals. He released his first album, Champion Fiddler, in 1968 and appeared on six more during the 1970s. His last album, The Champion Returns, was released in 1995 and won an East Coast Music Award in 1996. Lee passed away in 1999, but as the performers in today’s concert will show, the trail he blazed is becoming a well-travelled path.
