Daniel Lapp
Daniel Lapp, a renowned musician and educator from Prince George, BC, grew up surrounded by music, learning fiddle from his grandfather and five uncles. He pursued his musical education at UVic, earning a BMus in trumpet and during a career spanning more than four decades, Lapp has toured internationally, performing with many notable artists including Rickie Lee Jones, Gord Downie, Spirit of the West, Jim Cuddy, Broken Social Scene, and Lou Reed. In 1994, he founded the BC Fiddle Orchestra program which received a national award as the first youth ensemble of its kind in Canada. Lapp’s dedication to music earned him multiple accolades, including the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Service Award (2012), the Canadian Folk Music Association’s Innovator Award (2013), the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Canadian Grand Masters Fiddle Association (2019), and the One World One Family Humanitarian Award for Canada (2025). For the past 35 years Lapp has been collecting and preserving BC’s fiddle history, amassing more than 3,000 tunes by over 300 local composers. As the founding Artistic Director of the Victoria Conservatory of Music’s School of Contemporary Music, he teaches 190 students weekly. Lapp also launched Woodbox Records in 2025, a label aimed at promoting BC fiddle music globally. In the fall of 2026 he will be awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Music from the University of Victoria.
